Tracks
You boarded the wrong train,
heading down the wrong tracks.
Maybe you weren’t paying attention.
Maybe you hoped it would still take you to your destination.
Or maybe you just didn’t want to wait alone—
on the platform, in the dark, in the cold.
The doors slid shut and you stayed put.
You told yourself, this is fine.
The stops blurred past—
you could have stepped off,
turned around,
started over.
Each time, you thought,
I’ve come this far.
The further you go, the harder it is to leave.
Racing down the track, you count the miles, the years,
the moments you can’t get back.
So you stay.
By the time you see this track will never take you back,
the cost of leaving is impossible to pay.
