The ADHD Side Quest

Gamers know, if it glows it's either important or it's a side quest. ADHDers see the shinny thing but the side quest catches us off guard.

Ever start a task with the best intentions, only to end up completely off track? For ADHDers this will sound all too familiar.

Here’s the story of how I recently embarked upon one of those D&D style side quests when I was supposed to be doing that quick tidy-up you do before guests arrive.

Get ready for a full-blown, D&D style adventure - but with houseplants...

The Call to Action

Set in the mystical realm of household management, our tale begins with a sudden and urgent missive from a cherished ally, declaring their imminent arrival.

Our protagonist, a wizard no less, known for his prowess in many arcane arts yet often entangled in the chaos of everyday life (erm, ADHD), finds his humble dwelling in a state of utter disarray.

Determined to restore order and create a welcoming sanctuary, the wizard leaps into action, darting from chamber to chamber, casting spells of tidying, and scrubbing surfaces with enchanted cloths - striving to transform his abode into a place of serenity and order.

The Side Quest Unfolds

Amidst this whirlwind of cleaning, the wizard’s keen eye falls upon a withering houseplant—a loyal green companion suffering in its current state.

Realising the plant's dire need for water to thrive, the wizard fetches a watering can imbued a special potion - “The Essence of Life”.

However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the plant has outgrown its pot and requires a larger vessel to flourish properly.

The Great Plant Exchange

Without a suitable pot in his inventory, our hero devises a cunning plan involving a series of plant swaps. Like a procession of hermit crabs exchanging shells, each plant would be transplanted to a larger pot, accommodating their growing needs.

What begins as a simple watering errand transformed into an elaborate gardening ritual.

Soil and pots scatter across the floor as the wizard meticulously repots each plant into its new home, a complex dance of horticultural magic.

The Chaotic Aftermath

Time, that relentless adversary, marches on swiftly. The wizard is wand deep in soil when their companion arrives.

Stepping into a scene of utter pandemonium: soil strewn about, pots and plants in various stages of repotting, and the wizard themselves, resembling a survivor of a gardening cataclysm.

The once orderly mission has spiraled into chaos. And the housework was never completed.

The Hug and Help

A wave of embarrassment washes over the wizard as he awaits his friend's reaction. "A thousand, apologies my friend, for I have embarked upon an unexpected adventure" laments the wizard.

Instead of a tidy, welcoming home, their friend encounters a botanical disaster zone.

With stammering explanations, the wizard braces for judgment. Yet, to their astonishment, their friend merely approaches, enveloping them in a warm embrace. “Fear not the mess; it is but life unfolding”. The wizard is reassured, the words a soothing balm.

But the friend's support does not end with kind words. Rolling up their sleeves, they set about the scullery, crafting a delicious banquet - food to sustain the adventure!

The wizard sweeps up the soil, repots the remaining plants, and reinstates a semblance of harmony.

Reflection and Revelation

In hindsight, our wizard can only laugh at the absurdity of the situation. Their noble intentions had been derailed by the whims of their ADHD mind, transforming a simple task into an unpredictable quest. This incident, though not unique, serves as a reminder of how ADHDers can turn mundane chores into grand escapades.

Our wizard learned to extend grace to himself, to recognise these side quests as intrinsic to their nature.

Their diversions inject spontaneity into life and, occasionally, result in flourishing, happier plants.

Most importantly, the wizard was reminded of the profound value of true a fellowship. Their companion’s understanding and willingness to help made all the difference.

Thus, should you find yourself on an unexpected ADHD side quest, take a deep breath, embrace the chaos, and cherish the journey. If you have a friend who offers a hug and assistance amidst the mess, hold them close, for they are truly invaluable.
