Trigger warnings: Sexual Promiscuity, Sex & Public Sex
A scorching 36°C day in Budapest, and my friend and I decide to cool off at Széchenyi Baths, the city's famous thermal oasis. Armed with optimism and lacking SPF 50, we waltzed into this grand old complex ready to soak our troubles away.
First off, the weather was perfect — clear skies and a relentless sun that threatened to turn us into crispy critters. We strategically stationed ourselves at the outdoor pools, where we could dip into the slightly cooler waters or sunbathe like lizards on the comfortable loungers. Eight hours later, we had mastered the art of indoor thermal pool-hopping, and outdoor people watching to manage the sun's wrath, retreating indoors as frequently as needed to avoid sunburn.
Széchenyi Baths were buzzing. From pink speedo clad stag-dos to hen parties and plenty of families and couples too, it was a spectacle of Budapest's social tapestry.
The place felt massive, slightly old-school, but surprisingly not as cramped as I feared.
Cleanliness-wise, they could use a spruce here and there, but overall, it was tidy enough to dip in without hesitation.
There was so much to do here. Between pools, steam rooms, saunas and plunge pools. Take your time, explore the place - but read the signs. I didn’t - and I ended up in the “Swimwear not allowed” sauna by accident - I quickly left, slightly red faced (and not from the heat).
The vibe of the place? Take your pick. You could frolic with the energetic stag do’s in the ‘Aventure Pool’ or find solace in a tranquil corner where families floated like contented lily pads. My friend and I enjoyed the mix, alternating between belly laughs with a couple of beers to sleeping contently on the sun lounger.
Speaking of sleeping, while my friend napped in the sun, I struck up a Grindr conversation with a charming guy visiting the baths with his husband.
I’m reliably told Budapest isn't just about thermal baths and breathtaking architecture; it's also about meeting new people.
Before long, we found ourselves in a steamy situation in the darkest corner of the quietest sauna. Slightly risky, but the excitement of Eiffel Towering a cute cub with his husband was a temptation my ADHD impulsivity could not resist.
Why does the pool look like a dick though?
Luckily no one walked in while I was buried balls deep in the red faced fella. After we moved to the showers in the changing rooms to cool off, buff-husband wanted a protein drink too. Steamy for sure, these kind of adventures are all part of the gay/straight vacation experience.
Széchenyi Baths isn't just about relaxation; it's about seizing the moment and enjoying Budapest's vibrant culture in unexpected ways.
All in all, Széchenyi offered more than just a soak. It was a dip into Budapest's vibrant culture, where sunburns and unexpected encounters collide in a harmonious splash. For the price, it was a steal, leaving me refreshed and thoroughly entertained.
So, whether you're a sun worshipper, spa aficionado, or just someone who enjoys making new friends, Széchenyi Baths promises a day well spent. Just remember to read the signs — or not.
